Techiman-Krobo Nursing College Shut Down After Student Protest Over Poor Conditions and Leadership Concerns

The Techiman-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Bono East Region has been temporarily closed by the Ministry of Health following a student protest on July 27, 2026, that escalated into a confrontation with police.
Students Demand Removal of Principal and Dean
Hundreds of students staged a demonstration on campus to demand the immediate removal of the school’s leadership. Their core demands were the resignation of the Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Hellen Gifty Dwamena Amoah, and the Dean.
Students cited prolonged grievances relating to student welfare. Key issues raised include: • Poor sanitation on campus and in hostels • Bad food served in the dining hall • Weak lighting around campus, raising security concerns • Lack of lecturer commitment to teaching and academic supervision
“Conditions have become unbearable. We are being trained to save lives, but we are living in filth and darkness,” one student told reporters during the protest.
Protest Turns Tense After Police Intervention
The demonstration turned tense after police officers were deployed to the campus to restore order. Students alleged excessive use of force during the dispersal. No major injuries were reported, but the clash heightened tensions between students and authorities.
The National Union of Ghana Students, NUGS, has since called for an official investigation into the handling of the demonstration by security personnel.
Concerns Raised Over Principal’s Past Conduct
In a petition submitted to stakeholders, students and observers also drew attention to the Principal’s previous tenure.
“It has come to our attention that the current Principal of Techiman-Krobo Nursing and Midwifery Training College previously served at Mampong Nursing and Midwifery Training College. During her tenure at Mampong, students agitated against her leadership style.
One of the key issues raised was her decision to block the main entrance road leading from the school to the maternity block. This action made it difficult for doctors and nurses to access the maternity block and resulted in disputes. Following the agitation, she later opened a gate to allow access.
Additionally, she was also barred from using the main access road to enter the campus before the matter was eventually resolved.
We are reporting this to highlight a pattern of conduct that may affect administration and student-staff relations.”
Government Response: Closure and Joint Assessment
In response to the unrest, the Ministry of Health announced an immediate temporary shutdown of the college until further notice. All students were directed to vacate the campus.
The Ministry, in collaboration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana, has organized a joint monitoring and assessment visit to evaluate campus conditions, infrastructure, and management practices.
The assessment team is expected to review sanitation, food services, academic delivery, and administrative conduct before advising on reopening.
